This is where the parents are in the water with their little one, along with the teacher/instructor teaching them the basic water orientation and water safety techniques. This can be a lot of fun for both child and parent, as this is where the love of swimming is born.
We teach children with aids in the form of armbands and we endeavour to teach them technique first, such as putting their face in the water – kicking legs – and doing arm movements – all at once before removing armbands and overcoming the fear related to being in the water.
These classes are held along with able bodied/minded students, and we endeavour to teach all children how to swim. These classes are held along with able bodied/minded students, we endeavour to teach all children how to swim.
We are very proud to have our adult classes and endeavour not only to teach the young, but to teach everybody to be able to swim with confidence.
The Aqua Centre Swimming School was started in 1992 with just 6 students at The New You Hydro Spa in Edenvale, this was the indoor facility that was used to teach children to learn to swim, as well as coach children. The Edenvale High School was the outdoor venue that The Aqua Centre Swimming School used for the bigger children. Antoinette Macaulay was the founding member of The Aqua Centre, and owned the school from 1992 until the end of 2017. Kirsten Hubbard, the current owner and past pupil of The Aqua Centre swam with The Aqua Centre from January 1993 – May 1998, where she moved to a long distance coach to further her swimming career. All praise to Antoinette Macaulay for sparking the swimming bug in Kirsten and for Kirsten deciding to purchase her Legacy many years later.
Parents must remember that each child is an individual human being and progress is never the same in any child, whether your child is the quickest or the slowest to learn each is trying to achieve in their own unique way and at their own unique pace. The more exposure to swimming and practising that they get the better their response to lessons will be. To accommodate the vast demand for swimming at the swimming school, we have employed numerous well qualified swimming teachers to assist teaching the lessons. All these teachers are properly qualified and have been trained to teach according to the Swim Dynamics methods. All our teachers are trained in CPR (annually re-certified) and are certified in First Aid Level 1. The passion that each of these teachers have to teach children to swim is evident in the amount of love and response that these teachers get from their students. Choosing The Aqua Centre Swimming School as your partner in learning a beneficial life skill will not only give confidence in the water, but stimulates fine and gross motor skills, language and cognitive milestones for children and physical & mental stimulation in adults. Our philosophy is “FUN, with a SPLASH of confidence”.
We service many of the nursery schools and aftercares in and around the Edenvale area, whereby we collect the children from the specific school in our own Toyota Quantum. How does it work you ask: we send out documentation 2x a year to the schools whereby you are able to mark off you would like your child to swim via the school. We collect on specific days and times that the school confirms with us. These lessons take place 2x a week, being Mondays & Wednesday or Tuesdays & Thursdays. Our driver, who is a full qualified PDP driver and has been with the swimming school for 7 years, drives the Quantum and we send along an assistant who collects the children from inside their school, takes them to the bus, straps them in and sits with them in the back of the vehicle and brings them to the swimming school for their lessons. We have another assistant that assists with changing the children from their clothes into their swimming costume for their lessons. The nursery school/aftercare lessons are guaranteed to be 20mins lessons, but there are 30 mins timeslots allocated to these schools, and we endeavour to teach between 20 mins and 30 mins per class.
We service about 22 of the school in Edenvale (nursery school & after cares)
Every child is unique, and so therefore it is only an estimate when saying how long it will take a child to learn to swim, it can take about 100 lessons for a child to learn to swim.

Are YOU drownproofed? What do you think drownproofing is? No one is drownproofed because anything can happen in any body of water, whether you are able to swim or not. We teach safety precautions in and around water, while the children are learning to swim.
I have been with The Aqua Centre Swimming School for over 4 years now and I have never had a moment of doubt about the school. The instructors give each child the personal attention they need i.e working on their techniques. As an added advantage my two children (6 and 3 years old) have learned discipline (they cry if we miss a class), confidence and social skills. Kirsten and Team, continue being as amazing as you are!
Monyane MalebeMy daughter started swimming lessons with The Aqua Centre in September 2017, after a failed attempt with another swimming school in 2016. She has gone from strength to strength and we are glad to say that she is water safe – a huge concern for us as parents, as we have a swimming pool at home. She absolutely enjoys her swimming lessons, is very fond of and has created strong bonds with her swimming “teachers”. She gets extremely excited to participate in the swimming gala’s, taking place every six months and has made many friends with her fellow swimming “classmates”. The Aqua Centre was able to take my daughter, tailor their training on the back of her previous experience and get her trained and water safe, due to the fact that they were willing to adapt their lessons and approach to her individual needs. We remain indebted to teacher Kirsten, teacher Glenda and all staff at The Aqua Centre for giving us as parents this great gift and comfort of ensuring our daughter’s safety in and around the swimming pool.
Esmé & Phillip WelgemoedI enrolled my daughter, Shellaine Pahl, for swimming classes with "Teacher Glenda" at the Aqua Centre in November 2012, shortly after her 1st birthday. Over the past 7 years, I have watched as my daughter has grown from barely being able to float with armbands into one of the strongest swimmers in her age group. Her performances at the Aqua Centre galas over the past years are a testament to just how far she has come under Glenda's instruction, being able to hold her own against swimmers much older than she is. I believe that Glenda is one of the best swimming instructors I have ever met and is a true asset to the Aqua Centre. Her kind nature and nurturing demeanour encourage young children to give their best and she has the ability to quickly determine a child's strengths and weaknesses and help them grow from strength to strength. The ability to swim is, I believe, one of the first and most important skills any child should master and for any parent looking for a prospective swimming school I can wholeheartedly endorse and recommend THE AQUA CENTRE. I wish Kirsten, Glenda and the rest of the team everything of the best and every success in the future.
